Mark Chee, one of the best and one of my most favorite Navajo artists, made this superb hair ornament with his most gorgeous hand stamp work and a piece of natural Number 8 mine turquoise. He always picked the best stones, too. Every aspect of this piece is fabulous. This is an elegant and deceptively simple presentation by the great Mark Chee who w as one of the all time great Navajo artists, and has been recognized by winning many awards, having been represented in the best of galleries and also being in the best museums. He is historically one of the most important and collectible great Navajo artists.

Mark Chee lived from 1914 till 1981. I bought some of his work during a trip in the early 1970s and have always loved his work. I remember when I bought his earrings then I was told he was a famous silversmith but at that time I didn't care about his fame: just about the quality of the work, which was wonderful. He loved top quality turquoise. What a gorgeous man he was, and his work is always special.

If you're lucky enough to end up with this hair ornament, you will always be grateful to have it. There's an elegant simplicity but a depth of great beauty. It will be an asset to any collection. I believe his work as one of the most collectible silversmiths, has increased in value over the years. Ornament is a very BEST example of his work! The ornament measures 3-3/4" x 1-3/4" weighing 33.16grams and the matching stick measures 5-1/6" long by 5/8" wide and weighs 14.25 grams.

The turquoise measures 3/4" x 1/2". It is properly hallmarked by Mark Chee but not signed for silver content, which is usual for those times but it is sterling silver. The condition is excellent vintage, wearable and collectible. The work is superb and this is the finest possible example for your collection. I just love this hair ornament and I think you will too.

Pricing is below value for his work, which sells much higher, especially of this quality, so this lower price is temporary. I will not be lowering it; I'll be raising it to closer to fair value, in time. Be sure to add me to your favorites list. Take a look at my store. Yes, I sometimes can take reasonable offers.

It's less expensive and is also tracked. First Class International is no longer offered by the US Postal Service. Please let me know if you would like to return something. I care that you're happy and about my accuracy, and will always stand behind my work.

My attributions are guaranteed for my lifetime. When I include pages from published books in my listings it is in accordance with Fair Use Law, which permits the use of source material for discussion, reference, education and criticism. Attributions on many of the old pieces of Native American jewelry are sometimes a moving target. All the books have errors, so in addition to counterchecking, I have developed some expertise over the years and I do care about getting it right, so as more information comes to light I update my listings and also get in touch with my previous buyers, to inform them of any changes in attributions. Everything I sell comes from my personal collection or is something that I would include in my personal collection. I vet every item carefully for quality and condition, and offer you the best.

I want you to be able to rely on me for top quality, superb items that are often unique and rare examples of old antique vintage southwest, indian, native american and fine gold and gemstones, whether you're starting a collection or adding to one, or want something great to wear or gift. My goal is that all my buyers are delighted, that my special pieces find the right homes.
